Life Looks A Bit Different
Owen was born with Down Syndrome in 2020. A few days after he was born, he was rushed to the hospital because he was having breathing complications. Upon this visit, the doctors found that his bowels were not connected all the way through and that he had two holes in his heart.
Because of the pandemic, Owen's multiple and necessary surgeries to restore his body were spread out over a year instead of just a few days. This was a blessing in disguise which allowed time for Owen to recover and his family to bond with him in between surgeries.
A Scary Diagnosis
Owen is the youngest of 8 total siblings. He is turning 6 years old and has brought so much joy and love into the world and his family!
In 2024 Owen was diagnosed with epilepsy which Jenna says was one of the scariest moments of her life. While the doctors can't guarantee that he won't experience another seizure, his family is holding on to faith in God, and the medication that He has provided for Owen since his recent diagnosis, that Owen won't experience another seizure.
A Medical Necessity
Doctors have said that it is medically necessary for Owen to have continued speech therapy to improve his quality of life. However, the Smith's insurance no longer covers this exorbitant cost.
With Owen's added challenges in life, speech therapy provides him with not only the ability to communicate, but immense cognitive development and understanding for navigating his everyday life. This allows him to have relationship and connection with others outside of his family which is extremely important.
